Exercise is the single most effective strategy to prevent a fragility fracture

The mechanical forces generated by exercise are what stimulates bone formation. This is particularly true of higher impact activities like
- Walking/climbing stairs
- Jogging/running
- Jumping/skipping
Weight bearing exercise makes your muscles work against gravity. Resistance exercise makes your muscles lift or push weight. Both are important in bone development.

There is evidence that those with the lowest Bone Mineral Density (BMD) levels tend to gain the most benefits from exercise.
If you are not absorbing calcium or your diet is calcium deficient, exercise may have a detrimental effect because muscles also require calcium to function. It is important to have a bone density scan to be confident of your bone calcium levels.
